Dome Camera

The older of the two, it’s known by its dome-liked shape. Commonly seen in places like casinos, retail stores, and restaurants. This is due to their more fashionable appearance and because they can blend easily with their surroundings. Thanks to its dome shape, it’s difficult to tell which direction it’s facing. It usually has a vandal-proof dome and a metal base to protect it from abuse and the elements.

Turret Camera

Also known as mini-dome, eyeball or flat-faced dome camera, it has a ball and socket design which allows it to rotate freely once the base is mounted. It’s largely preferred thanks to this feature as it allows you to view multiple directions with a single camera. Most turret cameras are PoE( Power over Ethernet) which means that you don’t have to use a separate power cable to power it. This is due to its unique structure, which makes it difficult to make this camera wireless.

Moreover, some turret camera hikvision use EXIR night vision. This means that the infrared LED is separated from the camera lens and is rectangular, which allows a clearer image as compared to normal infrared.

Which should I use?

Both cameras have their strengths and weaknesses, which allows them to excel in different situations. Dome cameras are better in areas that are more prone to damage like vandalism as their dome protects them from whatever damage that may be attempted on it. Its dome makes it suitable for places where you don’t want people to be able to tell where the camera is facing.
